Wildfire Gymnastics began its thirteenth compulsory competition season on September 9th 2015. The SoCal 1st Prelim, held at the Laguna Hills Community Center, included 474 gymnasts. Four Wildfire gymnasts, they representing Levels 3, 4 and 5, did so rank among the top 5 of that total number of 474 participating. By the end of the weekend Wildfire emerged as Level 4 and 5 Team Champions, our Level 3’s then finishing 2nd.
Becoming Level 5 Team Champions for 2015 was a most positive result, Wildfire having 8 gymnasts competing. By rules, 5 scores per event are calculated and combined to achieve the team total. From these 8 girls came 18 top 2 finishes, 11 of them for 1st. Three of these 8 girls ended the meet by becoming Gold Medal All Around Champions, a fourth winning an AA Silver. Of the total roster of 67 Level 5 gymnasts entered, Wildfire ranked 3 athletes inside the top 5, they being Kaitlyn Tran, Brisa Mariano and Avery Byun who lead the list. Avery, posting a 37.850, won the 9 year old age division All Around placing 1st on Beam (9.625) and Floor (9.600). Avery’s Floor score was the highest among Level 5’s including all age groups. Ten year old AA champion and Beam runner up (9.750) Kaitlyn Tran was 3rd in that assembly of 67 followed by 12 year old All Around Champion Brisa Mariano, she winning Floor and then Beam with the meet high score for the event of 9.800. Standout performances by Amy Sullivan included a Silver Medal All Around effort, a win on Beam and a win on Vault with the Level 5 high Vault score of the competition.
By meet’s end, Wildfire emerged as the 2015 Level 4 SoCal 1st Prelim Team Champions. There were 178 Level 4 gymnasts participating and Wildfire’s Skylar Ruffner ranked 2nd among them all. She finishing 1st All Around in her age division (37.875), Skylar also won Bars posting a 9.675. That was the highest Bar score of the entire Level 4 competition, including every age group and session. In fact it was the 2nd highest Bar score of the weekend including all Levels. Three more Wildfire athletes concluded their competition among the top 10 of that group of 178 participating Level 4’s. Included were eleven year old Alexa Alcantar (2nd AA) who finished out as the leading scoring Vaulter of the entire Level 4 competition, Laurel Jin (2nd AA, 1st Floor - 9.625) and 11 year old All Around Bronze Medalist Mia Giordano.
