Wildfire Level 10 gymnasts Nicoletta Koulos (UCLA, J.O National Team Member - 2016), Sydney Gonzales (Oregon State, National Team Member - 2017) and 2016 Level 9 AA Silver Medalist, Jordyn Duffield culminated their 2017 competition season at the Indianapolis Convention Center on the weekend of May 4th to 7th.

From across the country, east to west and north to south, came some 681 gymnasts competing for honors at the 2017 USAG Junior Olympic Level 10 National Championships. These athletes represented every state from each of the 8 designated regions comprising the USAG organizational geographic framework of the United States. At J.O. Nationals, 56 gymnasts compete in each of twelve separate age groups contested: six Junior and six Senior. Athletes qualify by ranking among the top seven per age division at their respective Regional Championships.

Wildfire’s Junior ‘D’, Sydney Gonzales (three time qualifier, 2016 National Vault Champion) completed her J.O. National competition as the highest scoring Junior ‘D’ athlete from Region 1, the eventual 2017 National Champions. Sydney maintained standout performances throughout her competition (3rd AA, 3rd Vault - 9.775, 5th Beam - 9.450 and 3rd Floor - 9.575). Her 3rd place All Around effort put her on the 2107 - 2018 J.O. National Team, she reporting to the J.O. National Team Camp in July. The top four AA finishers per age group are designated as J.O.National Team Members. Sydney is the ninth Wildfire gymnast to achieve that honor. She will share this distinction with those who qualified in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016 and now 2017. Wildfire qualified two in 2013.

Four time J.O. National qualifier, Level 10 Nicoletta Koulos, competed as a Senior - A this year. From a field of 57 gymnasts, she ranked 5th All Around (placing 4th on Bars - 9.550). Nicoletta narrowly missed her second J.O. National Team experience. Nico being by the end of the meet though, was the highest scoring Senior ‘A’ gymnast from Region 1. In this way, she served well the Regional Team, they culminating as the 2017 Senior ‘A’ National Champions. Nicoletta would be the second of two Wildfire competitors ranking 1st among respective Regional Teams.

Jordyn Duffield (2016 Level 9 Vault Champion) did well as a first time Level 10 qualifier as she bravely fought off the remnants of a badly timed illness to come through as part of the Region 1 effort that clinched the Super Team Award, an award that reflects the current overall best preforming Region at these 2017 J.O. National Championships.
