Wildfire Level 10 gymnasts Nicoletta Koulos, Sydney Gonzales, Melanie Lockhart and Elle Golison along with Level 9 teammates , Jordyn Duffield, Logan Mc Bain, Alyssa Vulaj, Judy An, Lanie Kimura and Chase Farris have now culminated their 2016 competition season. For the Level 10’s, it was at the USAG J.O. National Championships in Fort Worth, TX. For the 9’s, it was at the Western National Championships in Missoula, MT. Both events occurred during the first two weeks in May.
From across the country, east to west and north to south, came some 672 gymnasts competing for honors at the 2016 USAG Junior Olympic Level 10 National Championships. These athletes represented every state from each of the 8 designated regions comprising the USAG organizational geographic framework of the United States. At J.O. Nationals, 56 gymnasts compete in each of twelve separate age groups contested: six Junior and six Senior. Athletes qualify by ranking among the top seven per age division at their respective Regional Championships.
Level 10 Nicoletta Koulos (three time qualifier and 2016 Region 1 AA Champion) completed her J.O. National competition ranked 4th AA, 2nd on Bars (9.625), 5th on Vault (9.600) and 5th on Beam (9.550). Nicoletta’s top 4 All Around finish puts her on the 2106 -2017 J.O. National Team, she reporting to the J.O. National Team Camp at the Karolyi Ranch in mid October. Nicoletta is the eighth J.O. National Team Member representing Wildfire Gymnastics. She will share this distinction with those who qualified in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and now 2016. Wildfire qualified two in 2013.
A 2015 J.O. National qualifier, Level 10 Sydney Gonzales, competed as a Junior B this year, she becoming the 2016 J.O. National Vault Champion (9.700). Sydney finished her day placing 7th AA of 57 gymnasts. As a Junior B, she was not only the highest All Around scoring SoCal athlete among that group, but also the highest scoring Junior B gymnast representing Region 1, a region consisting of SoCal, NorCal, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
As the Region 1 Level 10 All Around Champion for 2016, Senior F division’s Elle Golison finished out her club career as a first time J.O. National qualifier, becoming then the 2016 J.O. National Championships Silver Medalist for Vault (9.750), ranking 5th on Floor (9.625). Elle will be a student athlete at Utah State beginning this Fall. Region 1 All Around Silver Medalist and first time J.O. National qualifier, Melanie Lockhart pursued a sound effort for 12th place AA, she complementing that achievement with a 5th on Vault (9.600) and a 6th on Floor.
The USAG J.O. Western National Championships is the defining championships for the Level 9 gymnast as they identify with clubs from states west of the Mississippi River. These clubs are organized into four regions: Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4. SoCal is part of Region 1.
Level 9 Junior 8 Vault Champion (9.775), Jordyn Duffield finished her Western National Championship experience ranked 2nd All Around, 2nd on Beam and 3rd on Floor. In so doing Jordyn by means of her 38.100 AA total, placed herself as the fifth highest scoring All Around gymnast of the 446 gymnasts who competed in Missoula, including all age divisions.
Logan Mc Bain the 2016 SoCal Level 9 State AA Champion, Region 1 Level 9 AA Champion and now Senior 4 division’s Level 9 Western National AA Bronze Medalist, (3rd Beam) conducted her season proving by the end profound success. Standout performances from Alyssa Vulaj accounting for a 7th place All Around finish and FX Bronze Medal, stands her in common with Jordyn, and Logan as they each ranked inside the top seven as part of their respective age groups, these age divisions representing the entire Western United States.
