The 2017 San Diego Classic, a three day affair, was held at the San Diego Town and Country Hotel Resort on the weekend of January 29. From this, came four team wins, they being four Levels 7, 8, 9 and 10. At the conclusion of the competition weekend involving some 1321 gymnasts representing just over 60 teams, Wildfire gymnasts accounted for 13 top three All Around awards, 5 for Gold. There were also 53 Individual Event top 3 award winners, 24 of them Gold Medalists.

There were 54 OP level athletes participating as part of the Sand Diego Classic, in total. Ranking 2nd of that number of 54 was the 13 - 15 year old age division’s All Around Champion Sydney Gonzales, she winning Vault here with a 9.725. She was the 2016 Jr. B, J.O. National Champion. Directly following Sydney was this year’s 13 - 15 All Around Bronze Medalist and 2016’s Level 9 Jr. B, Western National Vault Champion, Jordyn Duffield. Jordyn tied Sydney for the win on Vault. Current J.O. National Team Member, Nicoletta Koulos ranked 3rd as the 16 + division’s AA Bronze medalist (2nd Vault - 9.700). All three gymnasts placed, by score, among the top seven of that number of 54 total OP athletes competing, the leading result being a named 2017 San Diego Classic OP Division Team Champions.

Of 73 Level 9 gymnasts competing, Wildfire’s Ali Rannalli ranked 8th among them, including all sessions and age groups. Ali, at sixteen, won her session’s All Around competition, while at the same time winning Bars and Beam. Lanie Kimura finished out then as the 14 - 15 AA Silver medalist, winning Beam with the highest Beam score among all Level 9’s including all age groups and session(9.500). Jayden Ruth (2016 Level 8 Regional AA Champion) ranked 3rd behind Lanie winning Bronze. Congratulations to Madison Olson for her highlight Gold Medal performance on Vault. Winning her age division, the posted 9.400 was the 4th highest ranked as part of all Level 9’s competing. Wildfire’s team Level 9 proved out as session Team Champions.

Of 166 Level 8 gymnasts competing, Wildfire’s Avery Byun ranked 1st among them, including all sessions and age groups. She did that by posting a 37.950 AA total. As part of the 9 -11 age division, Avery won three events in the process (1st Vault, Beam, Floor), highlighted by the fact that her Vault score (9.550) was the highest Level 8 Vault total of the weekend. Congratulations to 13 year old AA Gold medalist Kimi Kishimoto (37.575) for ranking second among the 166 gymnasts competing. Winning three events in her session, Kimi’s Floor score at 9.700 was by meet’s end, the highest Level 8 posting on the event including all age groups and sessions. Standout Gold medal performances were characteristic of 14 + AA Silver Medalist, Julia Patrick (1st Vault, Beam and Floor - 9.600) and Audrey Easter being that her outstanding Beam score of 9.725 proved to be the leading individual event score representing the entire Level 8 roster of 166. By means of a 9.45 team event average, Wildfire emerged from among 26 Level 8 participating programs, as the 2017 San Diego Classic Level 8 Team Champions.

Of the total number of 167 Level 7 gymnasts competing at the Classic, Wildfire’s 13 year All Around Champion, Tenley Park (37.825, 1st Floor - 9.675) was ranked among the top six of that total number of 167. Showing sound and consistent efforts on their way to their Gold Medal victories were Claire MacDonald (1st Vault - 9.650, 1st Beam - 9.675), 2016 Level 5 AA Champion Kaitlyn Tran (1st Floor - 9.775) and 2016 Level 5 AA Silver Medalist, Amanda Acosta (1st Beam - 9.725, 1st Floor - 9.650). Of note, these powerful results indicate Claire’s Vault, Kaitlyn’s Floor and and Amanda’s Beam ranked overall on their respective events 2nd among the 167 total roster of Level 7 athletes including every age group and session. By the end, Wildfire Gymnastics wins as 2017 session team champions.
