Eleven All Around State Champions, Level 3 State Team Champions, Levels 4 and 5 State Team Champions Runner Up

During the weekend beginning Friday November 22, the Town and Country Resort in San Diego served as the host site for the USAG SoCal South State Championships, a three day event involving compulsory Levels 3, 4 and 5. The roster of competitors included 735 gymnasts representing 36 teams.

Wildfire brought 55 of them. These 55 gymnasts, competing in corresponding levels and age divisions, culminated their season finishing with a singular distinction. During the entire course of team competition, Wildfire was alone in the achievement of being the only team there to rank exclusively among the top two at every Level, our Level 3’s taking 1st, our Level 4 and 5 teams finishing 2nd. Wildfire gymnasts individually accumulated a total of 48 gold medals. Eleven of them were for All Around. Eleven is notable because, from this 2013 SoCal South State Championships, that would represent the highest number of 1st place AA awards given to a sum of athletes attached to any one team. Individual event final results reflected 8 gold medals for Vault, 12 for Bars, 8 for Beam and 9 for Floor. It is the case that two Wildfire gymnasts swept four events on their way to All Around wins. Three more then became triple event champions on course to their own 1st place AA championships.

Wildfire team Level 3 was responsible for 42 top three placings including 11 for All Around. Nineteen, or, nearly one half of the 42 were for first. There were 358 Level 3 gymnasts participating they being divided into 15 age groups. Three Wildfire gymnasts were ranked among the top four of that number of 358. Leading the way was 10C age division All Around Champion Laurel Jin with the high AA score of the entire Level 3 competition with a 38.350 (1st Vault, 1st Floor - 9.775, the highest Floor score of the entire Level 3 competition including all age groups). Second of 358 was All Around Champion, Paige Jang (38.250, 1st Bars, 1st Beam). Fourth on that list of top four finishers is 10C division AA runner up Kenzi Arnold (1st Beam - 9.575, the highest Beam score of the entire Level 3 Competition including all age groups). Divisional All Around Champions, Ruby Mach (37.825, 1st Vault, 1st Bars), Makayla Hoyt (1st Vault, 1st Bars) and Kaitlin Boutros (1st Bars) complete the line up of five Wildfire Level 3 All Around winners at State Championships. Additional Level 3 State performances of note would embrace those by 2nd place AA runner ups Emily Tjon, Reagan Smith and Amelia Wagner (1st Vault, 1st Beam) adding to Wildfire’s AA Bronze Medal finalists Aarushi Anil and Katarina Delgado.

Wildfire entered 13 Level 4 gymnasts from whom were achieved 23 top 3 individual event and AA finishes. Nine of these are for All Around. The Level 4 sessions comprised in total 260 gymnasts. From this complete roster of 260, Wildfire’s Makenzie Stanton (38.30, 1st Bars - 9.825!, 1st Floor - 9.775) and 11A division All Around Champion and four event winner, Ryley Hamilton (38.225), by meet’s end were each ranked among the top six. Notable too for Makenzie, is that her Bar effort resulted in the highest scoring Bar routine of the entire three day competition including ALL levels of competition and age groups. Further successes include additional All Around victories for age group specific AA Gold Medalists Julia Patrick (37.825, 1st Bars, 1st Beam) and Erica Miller (1st Vault, Bars and Beam). AA Silver Medalists include Erika Flaherty (38.050, 1st floor- 9.80!) and Mackenzie Wong (37.80). Sound performances were characteristic as well for All Around Bronze Medalists, Leah Ellwein (37.775) and Maya Alves (37.30, 1st Vault).

The Level 5 competition involved 116 gymnasts divided into 8 age groups. Wildfire gymnasts won 3 age divisions, sharing a tie for the most All Around wins by any one team. First among Wildfire’s leaders was 5th ranked of 116 gymnasts and 12 year old All Around Champion Jenna Schindele (37.80, 1st Floor). Jenna was followed closely by Wildfire’s second four event winner of the weekend and eventual AA Champion Rachel Baxter (37.675). Placing 1st on on each event, Rachel’s Vault performance accounted for a 9.775 which later proved to be the highest Vault score of the three day competition including All levels and age groups. Three event Gold Medalist (Vault, Bars and Floor), Morgan Langseth emerged from her session as our third Level 5 All Around Champion of the day. Placing 3rd All Around among 12 year olds, Staci Ensminger completed her meet experience as State Beam Champion. On her way to that achievement she posted Wildfire’s third highest Level 5 All Around score (37.35) helping secure a 13th ranking among the 116 athletes participating. Eleven year old Allyson Hom had her strongest and most successful meet of the year concluding her 2013 season at 2nd AA!
